You’ve been searching the internet for the best way to improve your golf swing.
You should shallow the club. No. You should steepen the attack angle. No! You should SWEEP the ball off a tee. You should keep your head down. Or maybe not. You should bend your knees and keep your left arm straight… but the tour pros don’t have straight arms at impact…SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?!
Here it is. Here is the MOST IMPORTANT THING in your golf swing that will help you change your game the fastest!
Ready?
Ok.
Know where your clubface is pointing. It’s that easy.
The crazy part is that as simple as that sounds most of us have no idea where the club face is pointed! Most of us are more focused on changing the path of the golf club or keeping our head down (Worst thing you could do by the way.)
Here’s why you struggle; The easiest athletic motion your body can make in a golf swing is to roll your forearms and pick up the golf club. This rolls the face open and puts you in a position that forces you to make compensations. Then on the down swing we pull the grip towards the ball while the face is wide open and we throw our hands at it to try and close the face at the last second hoping that we get it close to square and it might go towards our target. All of this while not using our largest muscles and using as little effort as possible.
“But I swing pretty hard!”
I had a conversation this week with a student who was upset that he wasn’t swinging it fast enough, yet when I swung my driver it looked effortless and the clubhead moved 15-20 miles an hour faster!
“I’m swinging way harder than you, why is my speed so slow?”
It’s not a bad question, and the answer is efficiency! Don’t worry, I’m circling back to why the club face is so important.
If the face is wide open, you’ve actually got to stop your body and arms from moving, and throw the clubhead at the ball. This actually moves the wrists beyond the point of max acceleration and starts to decelerate as they reach the end of their range of motion. SO, when the face is wide open your compensation to close it actually slows the clubhead down!
How do I fix my clubface? Awareness and understanding that the motion that makes the face most square….IS MORE WORK! You need to actually move your body, you need to have your wrists in the right position and you need to make sure you’re not just falling into the trap of “This feels most comfortable.”
Here’s what you’re going to do;
You’re going to make a backswing until the clubhead gets to your waist. Take a look at where it’s pointed. Is the toe up, or is the face at a 45 degree angle with the face pointed downward? Downward is what we are after.
Keep going up from there and feel like the palm of your trail hand is facing away from your target. Feel tight in the shoulder? Feel uncomfortable? Good! That’s square.
The club face controls everything and understanding that the curve of the ball is 100% a relationship between the face and the path is what will help you improve your game. There are a million ways to swing a club but the best players can control the face.
It seems so easy doesn't it. If you know where the face is pointed, it's kind of easy to know where the ball is going to go. Easy concept...hard to actually get yourself convinced to act on it!
